CONGRATULATIONS TO: Joan Loo Kim Yee of Jurong Secondary School!

The Beat Beneath the Heat
by: Joan Loo Kim Yee, Jurong Secondary School
The weather was hot, and as the sun was scorching every one its beams could reach, the YouthPark was all abuzz as the Wazzup Party started to turn heads and pull in the crowds in the afternoon on 12 September 2009.
Escaping the heat, modern dancers from Ang Mo Kio Secondary hid inside the National Youth Council building as they dolled up themselves to prepare for their dance act later on in the party. Outside, their comrades in the bazaar enthusiastically set up their booths in preparation for the crowd. The items on sale were donated by their teachers for a teachers’ day auction online, and the leftovers had been brought over to be snapped up for sale at low prices. The proceeds would be channeled to the needy students in the school, said Mendi Ang, a student tending the booth.
Other booths at the bazaar had also begun to attract customers. Kranji Secondary’s booth, selling in-house productions such as recipe books, Tan Ren Kiat explained that the school wanted the students to have a hand at entrepreneurship.
As the crowd continued to grow, Netty, from the Singapore Polytechnic Corporate Communications branch, offered us some insight on the event planning and execution. Having overseen most of the works, from planning the performances to matching the schedules for meetings with many other people involved, she admitted that the event was difficult to plan. Still, within the three months of planning, the event was successfully organized and designed, with Generation X, especially for raising awareness of an online portal, spbuddy.sg, where secondary school students can use the platform for activities, and to interact with other students.
Meanwhile, people had begun to gather to enjoy live band performances by bands such as the Fat Skunks. The band’s front man, Izaar, having performed several times at the Youth Park, jokingly reminded himself never to wear black again for any such performances. Hosting the event was Derrick, who had himself all prepared with sunglasses, said that he enjoyed hosting the event, with a nice crowd and good weather. As the aroma of the popcorn wafted through the crowd, and the tempting call from the ice-cream booth sounded out, the crowd was only beginning to enjoy themselves.
Through it all, the event was certainly one of a kind, and the participants were sure to have had a blast at the Youth Park. To find out more about events coming up, do take a look around spbuddy.sg!
